Intellon Corporation designs and sells integrated circuits (ICs) for powerline communications, providing HomePlug - compliant and other powerline ICs for home networking, networked entertainment, commercial and broadband over powerline (BPL) applications.
As the world leader in powerline networking technology, IC sales and product enablement, Intellon is well positioned to capitalize on the explosive growth in home networking, AV connectivity and the convergence of PC and consumer electronics environments. We created and patented the baseline technology for the HomePlug 1.0 standard and introduced the world's first HomePlug 1.0-based IC in June 2001. Since that time, we have introduced two new generations of HomePlug 1.0-based ICs, using technology innovation and integration to reduce IC and BOM prices for our customers. Intellon is also a major contributor to the baseline technology for the new 200 Mbps HomePlug Audio/Video (AV) standard. With more than five million HomePlug-based ICs sold, Intellon holds the dominant market share of the rapidly growing HomePlug market.
Intellon ICs are used to create instant networks, enabling PCs, broadband modems, set-top boxes, gaming consoles and audio/video devices to communicate instantly over existing power lines in the home. Our HomePlug AV ICs allow distribution of multiple HDTV streams over in-home powerlines. We are also a major provider of lower bandwidth Spread Spectrum Carrier (SSC) ICs; to date we have shipped more than five million of these command and control devices, with more coming into service every month.
Intellon is also a founding member of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. Founded in 1989, Intellon is a privately held company headquartered in Ocala, Florida. The company also has offices in Toronto, Canada, and San Jose, California.
Setting Industry Standards with Innovative Technology
Since its inception, Intellon has focused its research and development efforts on powerline communications (PLC) technology. We currently have 18 US patents, 15 pending US patents, 5 foreign patents, and 39 pending foreign patents. Our initial low-bandwidth Spread Spectrum Carrier (SSC) technology formed the basis for the CEBus and SAE powerline brake monitoring standards, and our innovative PowerPacket™ technology was chosen as the baseline for the PLC industry's HomePlug 1.0 specification. We are also a major technology contributor to the next-generation HomePlug AV standard, supports high-quality audio and visual applications, including high-definition television, whole-house audio and video streaming.
